Book 1 Chapters 7-8 & Book 2 Chapters 1-2

Winston immediately paid over the four dollars and slid the coveted thing into his pocket. What appealed to him about it was not so much its beauty as the air it seemed to possess of belonging to an age quite different from the present one... The old man had grown noticeably more cheerful after receiving the four dollars. Winston realized that he would have accepted three or even two.

 This shows how much Winston has slowly grown obsessed with the idea of the old world that he can only vaguely remember. As he works, Winston focuses on the question of whether the past permitted the citizens of Oceania more freedom, or if they are truly living a better life now. His newfound obsession is causing him to take uncertain risks.

His quest for his answer about freedom pushes him into a pub among proles, which is considered suspicious behavior. This also involves missing a night at the community center one too many times in a few weeks.

    I concur that Winston is getting obsessed with the mystery of whether the past was better or truly worst. He is so curious, yet he is so restricted because of the ridiculous security measures. His curiosity has been leading him down a dangerous path. I think that all of this carelessness he may have when searching for his answer will eventually lead to his vaporization. Especially, since Julia has come into his life; I feel that his emotions may cause him to make careless mistakes. Although, I may be incorrect and she could be keeping him in check.

Book 2 Chapters 7-10

In the dream he (Winston)  had remembered his last glimpse of his mother, and within a few moments of waking the cluster of small events surrounding it had all come back. It was a memory that he must have deliberately pushed out of his consciousness over many years. He was not certain of the date, but he could not have been less than ten years olf, possibly twelve, when it had happened (133).  Winston used to have little to no recollection of his dream and it appears that Big Brother is controlling people minds in a sense that they are suppressing the emotions of people because if people have emotions then they are capable of thinking for themselves which is something Big Brother doesn't want. Winston does notice that people seem dull and lack of emotion; people in the party tend to have to relearn what was suppressed.
